We approach the
hundredth anniversary of the construction of our parish church with a great
challenge. Government codes for seismic strength have been upgraded. Our
church has survived several quakes, and we have made previous efforts at
stabilizing the structure; yet new requirements make it necessary to invest a
major amount of resources if we want to continue to use our church. From the
analysis that has been made, we are reassured that the interior of our church
needs no basic change, but the exterior walls need significant strengthening.
In addition, as we prepare for the 100th anniversary of our church, we feel
that it is time to make an upgrade of the sound and lighting systems, as well
as do a repainting of the walls and ceiling.
The cost for such
a project has been estimated at $3,500,000 - which represents in some cases
the cost of constructing an entirely new church. Preserving what we have is
the choice we are making. We all realize that Santa Clara is irreplaceable at
any cost. Our needs, then, are great, and we need wide spread support for this
courageous endeavor.
As pastor I'm
happy to lead this campaign. Not all communities are able to preserve the
historical structures that mean so much to them. I am confident that our
parishioners, friends and "Partners In Preservation" can provide for the presence of
our beautiful church for the next 100 and more years.
Looking forward to
your participation and generous response in this campaign, I am
Sincerely,
(Rev.Msgr.)
Peter D. Nugent, Pastor
